Located on Portland’s vibrant NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, OX Restaurant is a standout Argentinian-inspired eatery that masterfully blends traditional wood-fired cooking with inventive flavors and impeccable technique. Specializing in dishes that celebrate rich, smoky aromas from an open grill fueled by white oak, OX offers a dining experience that’s both elevated and deeply authentic—a haven for lovers of premium grilled meats and bold, thoughtfully composed flavors.
The heart of OX’s menu lies in its exceptional selection of grilled meats, where the Grilled Ribeye & Skirt Steak Chimichurri shines as a carnivore’s dream—expertly cooked and imbued with fresh, herbaceous chimichurri sauce that cuts through the richness with balance and vibrancy. For those seeking textural intrigue and culinary daring, the Spicy Braised Beef Tripe & Octopus with Mint Aioli and Fingerling Chips is an absolute revelation, with perfectly poached octopus delivering a tender yet firm bite alongside the boldness of slow-braised tripe. Seafood options like Oysters on the Half Shell, sourced locally from Washington, arrive shucked to perfection, revealing a clean, subtle ocean flavor that complements the smoky undertones running throughout the menu.
For starters, the Fresh Clam Chowder with Smoked Marrow Bone, Green Onion, and Jalapeño makes an unforgettable debut. This dish layers creamy, delicately smoky broth with a nuanced kick from jalapeño, offering a comforting yet complex bowl that one customer so vividly described as “a delicate potato chowder in the best way.” Savory bites like the Beef Empanadas and the Cheese Empanada showcase classic Argentinian flair, enhanced by house-made chimichurri bread and dips that elevate every mouthful.
Ending on a sweet note, OX does not disappoint. Their Warm Hazelnut Torte with Honey-Chamomile Ice Cream and Honeycomb Candy is a luscious, velvety dessert that perfectly balances nutty richness with floral and honeyed sweetness. Alternatively, the Vanilla Bean Tres Leches Cake with grilled apple and dulce de leche offers a creamy, lightly tangy finish, while the refreshing House Pineapple Sorbet with coconut tapioca and lime zest acts as a bright palate cleanser.
The atmosphere at OX Restaurant is both refined and inviting. With an open kitchen centered around the wood-fired grill, diners are treated not only to exceptional food but a multisensory experience—the crackle of the fire, the smoky warmth in the air, and the intimate glow of natural wood textures contribute to an ambiance perfectly suited for special occasions or a memorable evening out. Service here is consistently attentive and polished, as noted by many guests, ensuring that glasses are never empty and courses flow smoothly.

This spot definitely requires a reservation. We tried to drop in on a random Monday and it was quite full. Had to wait 30 mins to get a seat at the bar, which is totally fine but unexpected for a strange time. The complementary cauliflower soup from the chef absolutely blew my mind. It was like a delicate potato chowder in the best way. The hint of chili oil was insanely good. It was perfect. I wish I could order it by itself. On a follow up visit, we got mushroom soup which was also very delicious, it had paprika. Warm house made sesame baguette ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - that baguette was genuinely warm - had the most perfect texture - salted butter: so soft, tasted milky and delicious - would reorder this if this is the only way to get chimmichri Tripe and octopus ⭐⭐⭐ - the octopus was 5 stars for me, but I'm starting to question if I'm a tripe girl - my boyfriend noted there was something missing, he seemed more content with more chimmichri on it, but not entirely - the octopus sells the dish though, it's the best octopus I've ever had Clam chowder with bone marrow ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - not super spicy - only the jalapenos were - I don't know if the bone marrow gave me much but I liked the dish over all - wasn't overly heavy - the clams were fresh Beef empanada ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - what I came in for - sweet and savory - wish the habanero was more spicy - needed get chimmichri for this Heirloom tomato salad ⭐⭐ - my boyfriend loves this but I was just ok with it - specifically some of the tomatoes were a little mushy to me but it was well seasoned and executed - I like the medley of vegetables too - the peppers had the tiniest bit of kick to them too bc they were in season! Roasted beet salad ⭐⭐⭐ - it was good but didn't blow my mind - it was just ok Taretare ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - it was a special so I'm unsure if they'd ever have it again - so amazing, I loved the yuzu and the seasoning - the adorable Brazilian bread balls with it were perfect Potatoes ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - really good - wish it was more crispy but a lot of them were perfect - the sauce was horseradish in the best way possible Mixed green Salad ⭐⭐ - just ok - little too salty for me - exactly what you'd expect but salty Rib eye ⭐⭐⭐ - you know? It didn't blow my mind. I might need to try another steak but I've come to realize I'm rarely impressed by steaks at resturaunts --- dessert --- Dulce de leche tres leches ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I adored every aspect of this - the dulce de leche was a little savory - the cake was certainly legitimate tres leches, but it wasn't moist moist which is totally fine, what passed for me was that it wasn't a sponge cake - offset in a good way by how fresh it was - the whip cream tasted hand whipped and wasn't sugary - the merange also wasn't so sugar - just a delightful dish
Reservation recommended! Ox has exceptional service; water glass is always filled, updates on your meal progress, table wiped down in between courses. This is an expensive meal for almost everyone (this should be obvious). The food is very, very good. Meat was cooked excellent, other courses were all good as well and dessert was a sweet treat bonus. Would absolutely go again for a special occasion!
Argentinian inspired, wood fired cooking with rich, smoky aromas wafting from the open grill. Reservations are highly recommended as the wait can be long for walk-ins. We booked about a month in advance for a party of 5, and still ended up at a table where one of us ended up at the corner of the table (the unofficial fifth seat squeezed in at the edge). The grilled meats were the star of the show. They were tender, expertly seasoned, and perfectly complemented by the chimichurri. Special mention goes to the clam chowder, served with whole Manila clams and a grilled bone marrow. The marrow is scooped into the soup, adding a deep, smoky richness that really set it apart. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and the staff was clearly passionate about the food they serve. Overall, Ox delivered a memorable dining experience. It’s a restaurant that lives up to its reputation.
This is a good place for a Fancy Dinner. All dishes are ordered a la carte. I would recommend making a reservation for a group over two people. I ordered their famous clam chowder, the beef short ribs and the pear salad. The clam chowder is extremely rich and deeply smoky. The beef short rib is a chewy grilled beef, which I personally prefer to fall-off-the-bone. I enjoy gnawing on the bones. The pear salad was also very rich from the bleu cheese and lovely vinaigrette.
Octopus and Tripe was absolutely amazing. Never have had poached Octopus but its now the only way to do it. Perfect texture. Oysters were locally from Washington. Very meaty and subtle ocean flavour. Shucked perfect, not a single bit of shell. The rib eye was solid. Cooked correctly. The wood flavors from the wood stove was an awesome touch. (White Oak)
I had such a great experience at Ox! The atmosphere was lively, and the staff welcomed us with warm smiles and kindness. I ordered the skirt steak, ribeye, and a tomato salad — everything was absolutely delicious. On top of that, I had a glass of wine recommended by the staff, and it paired perfectly with the steak. I don’t know much about wine, but the red wine I tried was amazing with the meal. I’d love to come back to Ox with family or my partner on a special occasion.
If you're planning to reserve a spot for a large group dinner, it's best to plan ahead. We booked OX a full month in advance for our company holiday party, and the preparation for our set menu was executed flawlessly. The place has a fantastic vibe, with that classic open-fire grill aroma hitting you as soon as you walk in. The staff kept the energy up and provided attentive service throughout the busy night. The food was outstanding— the steaks practically dissolved in your mouth, and the maple-glazed pork was tender and juicy, quickly becoming a team favorite. Now, let’s talk drinks: the cocktail game here is on point. The drinks were expertly mixed and easy to enjoy. It’s clear the bartenders don’t cut corners. Overall, it was a top-notch dining experience and a perfect way to celebrate the holidays with the team. Highly recommended if you’re after quality food and a lively atmosphere in PDX
